Mahul grew up in a small town near Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. He earned degrees in Zoology from the University of Calcutta and Biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. During his time at IIT Roorkee, he spent a summer in Dr. Amitabh Joshi’s lab at the Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), where he was first introduced to evolutionary genetics. He completed his Ph.D. in Biology at the University of Rochester and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Irvine. During his postdoctoral training, he was supported by an NIH K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award. He joined the Department of Biology at Texas A&M University as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2022.

Mahul is interested in understanding how heritable variation in phenotype and fitness arises and is maintained in natural populations. His research integrates evolutionary genetics, genomics, and computational biology to investigate the origins and consequences of genetic variation. Current lab research focuses on the functional and evolutionary impacts of structural variation and repetitive DNA, the evolution of sex-linked and sexually dimorphic repetitive sequences, and the development of genomic methods for studying genome evolution.

In the lab, Mahul supervises projects and occasionally convinces himself that answering emails counts as productive work.
